OUR REALITY
Louisiana’s Cancer Crisis & the Truth of “Cancer Alley”
The grim reality of the cancer crisis in Louisiana underscores the urgency of our work. Our state tragically ranks in the top-10 nationally for cancer mortality in the U.S. — a statistic we’re determined to change.
According to the CDC/National Center for Health Statistics, in 2021, Louisiana had the eighth-highest all cancer mortality rate in the nation, with 163.9 per 100,000 Louisianans dying from the disease annually.
An additional and deeply concerning dimension to Louisiana’s cancer crisis is the existence of “Cancer Alley”, a region along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. This 85-mile industrial corridor, which hosts more than 150 petrochemical plants and refineries, has for decades been linked to heightened cancer rates in its surrounding communities.
A recent study from Tulane University’s Environmental Law Clinic has offered a devastating perspective on this public health crisis. The research found that for individuals living in Cancer Alley, the lifetime cancer risk is nearly 50 times the national average. Residents in this region face a lifetime risk of cancer due to air pollution that is almost 800 times higher than what the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deems “acceptable.”
These disturbing facts demand immediate and decisive action. The complexity of Louisiana’s cancer crisis cannot be overstated, with causes ranging from environmental exposure to industry pollutants to gaps in access to quality healthcare. It is this stark reality that drives the mission of CAGLA CARES, urging us to advocate for comprehensive policy changes, support candidates committed to health equity and innovative cancer care, and tirelessly work towards a healthier Louisiana.
