The Cancer Advocacy Group of Louisiana, Inc. (“CAGLA”) respects the trust you place in us, and we are committed to safeguarding your privacy. We aim to ensure you understand our practices surrounding the gathering and utilization of your information. This privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”) outlines the nature of the data we gather about you, the circumstances and methods of its collection; its application; potential parties with whom we might share it; and the options available to you concerning our handling of your data.
This Privacy Policy encompasses all data gathered through your interactions with CAGLA, be it via digital, written, or verbal communication. This may include, but is not limited to, online form submissions, details provided during events, support expressed via petitions for public policy, submissions of personal narratives about cancer experiences, health insurance, medical debt, and other health-impacting issues. Data may be collected through our website, in-person meetings, or other methods. Our data collection also extends to any additional information about you that we may obtain either offline or online, including data received from affiliate and partner organizations or other third parties (collectively referred to as the “Sites”). By accessing our Sites or sharing your information with us, you are consenting to and acknowledging the practices detailed in this Privacy Policy.
This Privacy Policy outlines the methods we employ to maintain your privacy.
In the course of your interactions with CAGLA, we accumulate a range of data relating to you. Broadly, the kind and volume of data we gather depends on the nature of your engagement with CAGLA.
CAGLA gathers data that either directly identifies you or is capable of being associated with you as an individual. Throughout this Privacy Policy, such information will be collectively referred to as “Personal Information.” This comprises specific categories such as contact details, demographic data, health-related information, household specifics, financial details, social media data, employment-related data, and internet usage data, which includes information from cookies if you grant permission. We provide further explanations of these categories below.
Contact Details and Preferences. We may request details such as your name, postal address, phone number, mobile number, email address, and your areas of interest concerning various issues.
Demographic Data. We may solicit demographic information such as your location, gender identity, racial or ethnic background, sexual orientation, and/or primary language. We may supplement this information with publicly available data or data from third-party services. This demographic data assists us in understanding community needs and advocating for comprehensive representation.
Mission-Centric Information. As part of our mission to advocate for policies beneficial to cancer patients, we might request certain information from you. This information may be shared with governmental representatives to bolster our policy advocacy. This could encompass details about your experience with cancer, your insurance status, and whether you are a registered voter, among other things.
Financial Information. CAGLA welcomes and accepts online donations. If you donate online, we require your contact information for verification, which will be securely stored. We might employ a third-party payment service to process contributions made via the CAGLA Site. However, we only store financial information when required for record-keeping. We might also inquire about your household income for insurance verification or the extent of medical debt. Contributions or membership fees to CAGLA are not tax-deductible.
Social Media Data. If you interact with us directly on social media platforms, we may collect your social media identifiers and/or any interests or opinions you express.
Employment Data. If you seek employment with us, we may collect employment-related information, including your job title and the organization(s) you are or were associated with. We might also inquire about your work experience or industry as it relates to health insurance.
Internet Activity. We may gather data about server traffic and your browsing history, which might be associated with your Internet Protocol address or device type. This data aids us in measuring engagement on our Sites, assessing the effectiveness of our campaigns, and identifying the areas of interest for our constituency. Methods of collecting personal data about you:
CAGLA, along with its service providers, may gather Personal Information under various circumstances. For instance, we may collect information about you in the following situations:
Usage of Sites. Personal Information may be gathered through your interaction with our Sites. If you sign a petition or share additional personal data (like a personal story) in support of a petition, such information may be disclosed to public officials. CAGLA does not regulate how public officials utilize personal data shared in this manner.
We encourage you to exercise discretion when choosing to disclose your Personal Information in public forums. CAGLA has no control over the actions of other visitors to its Sites, so please be mindful when deciding to share personal data in any public section of any site. If you believe that a visitor to a CAGLA Site is misusing or improperly collecting information about you or other users, please get in touch with us.
Contributions or Membership Payments. If you make a donation or membership payment to CAGLA, we will collect Personal Information, which may include your name, address, and/or email address, so we can express our gratitude for your contribution. We may also gather limited financial information to process your donations.
Employment or Volunteer Involvement. If you seek employment with CAGLA or volunteer for CAGLA, we will collect data relevant to your role. For instance, if you submit a resume to CAGLA, we will collect your employment history. If you’re volunteering as a community leader, we’ll gather information about your location.
Social Media Interactions. If you choose to engage with CAGLA using your social media account, specific Personal Information from your social media account may be shared with us. This could include Personal Information that is part of your profile or your friends’ profiles. If you utilize a “like” button or other social media features while visiting our website, those social media companies may collect data about you. Your interactions with social media companies and their features are governed by their respective privacy policies.
Forms. If you opt to complete a membership form, online petition or sign-up, volunteer form, or story collection form, we will collect information from you either on paper or electronically via tablets or our website. Personal Information may include your contact information, your stance on public policy, your cancer story, etc. While providing such information is optional, it aids in illustrating the true impact of cancer and healthcare accessibility on specific communities. We may also collect your contact information if you sign a petition to alert your policy makers of needed governmental action in the fight against cancer.
Service Provider. If you partner with CAGLA to provide services, we may gather data such as your name, employer, title, and business contact information. This data is collected for the purpose of contacting you about the partnership. If necessary for payment purposes, we may also gather bank account information, employer identification number or Social Security number, address, etc.
Other Sources. We may receive your Personal Information from other sources, including, but not limited to, our affiliated political action committee (PAC), CAGLA CARES, and/or various partner corporations or public policy coalitions, voter rolls, or third-party supplemental data sources to augment or link the information we gather from you.
Usage of your personal data:
Both we and our service providers may use Personal Information for the following reasons:
Mission Fulfillment. The principal usage of your Personal Information is to facilitate our mission of eradicating cancer as a significant public health concern. Vendors, affiliates like CAGLA CARES, aligned coalitions like ballot measure committees, volunteers, or others may utilize your Personal Information under the guidance of CAGLA to engage you in our mission.
Data Analytics. We also conduct data analytics to gain a broader understanding of how individuals interact with CAGLA. This analysis aids us in enhancing mission delivery and support. When we perform data analytics, we might also utilize Other Information, which includes data that has been anonymized or aggregated in such a way that it no longer reveals your specific identity.
Targeted Fundraising. We may use specific information (such as name, address, phone number, or email information, dates of engagement, etc.) to contact you with the intention of raising funds for CAGLA. However, any such communication will offer you the option to opt-out of receiving similar future communications.
Other Business Purposes. Personal Information may be utilized for other business-related purposes. These may include conducting audits, monitoring and preventing fraud, developing new Sites, enhancing, improving or modifying our programs and Sites, identifying usage trends, gauging the efficacy of fundraising campaigns and mission activities, and growing and diversifying our business activities.
Who we may disclose your personal information to:
CAGLA does not sell or disclose the personal information that you provide or that we collect via our websites, with certain exceptions outlined below.
Coalitions. Occasionally, CAGLA forms partnerships with organizations that share our mission. If we gather personal information through a coalition website or page that we manage, we might share this information with coalition member organizations. We cannot guarantee how other coalition members will handle the information shared. We may occasionally share your information with other like-minded organizations whose products or services we believe our subscribers may find intriguing. However, we do not exchange, trade, rent, or give email lists to third parties or groups unless CAGLA is directly involved with them in mission-related activities. For instance, if we are engaged in a ballot measure, we may license our mailing list, including your contact details, to a political committee for use in awareness campaigns and mailings that align with our mission. We will restrict the usage in the license to the mission purpose.
Focus Groups. Occasionally, we may invite you to join a focus group so that we can gain insight into your opinions and better understand your needs and priorities concerning our mission.
Story Collection. From time to time, we may invite you to share your experiences with cancer, health insurance, caregiving, or other health-related matters to aid our advocacy efforts.
Third-Party Service Providers. We may need to disclose Personal Information to third parties that provide operational Sites on our behalf, such as website hosting, IT and infrastructure, data analytics, email delivery, or other technical or administrative services. Your information is shared solely for providing these services and is subject to confidentiality obligations.
CAGLA Affiliates. We may disclose your information to affiliated organizations that align with CAGLA’s mission, such as our political action committee CAGLA CARES.
Membership or Volunteer Sign-Up or Other Means. CAGLA is committed to providing regular email updates to our users. For instance, by signing a petition and supplying your email, we aim to keep you informed. You can opt-out of receiving email communications from us by following the instructions included in each such communication.
Social Media. You may share Personal Information with your social media account friends, other website users, and your social media account provider, in connection with your social sharing activity. Please note that any information you post within these public forums or social media pages can become public and anyone can read, collect, and use it. Please exercise caution when deciding whether to disclose your Personal Information in these forums.
Submission of Information to Elected Officials. Occasionally, CAGLA will distribute petitions or conduct similar activities online or at events, where we will ask you to submit personal information to influence elected officials (“Petitions”). This may include contact details, photographs, or personal experiences or opinions. We may provide some or all the personal information you offer to elected officials. However, we have no control over how an elected official will use your personal information.
Alternate Disclosures of Personal Data. We reserve the right to utilize and disclose your Personal Data, as we deem necessary or appropriate: (a) to abide by applicable laws, which could potentially involve laws outside your home country, to comply with requests from public and governmental authorities, potentially including authorities outside your home country, to collaborate with law enforcement, or for other legal purposes; (b) to enforce our Terms of Use; (c) to safeguard our rights, privacy, safety, or property, and that of our affiliates, you, or others. Moreover, in the event of a reorganization, merger, sale, joint venture, assignment, transfer, or other disposition of any or part of our organization (including in the case of bankruptcy or similar proceedings), CAGLA may utilize, disclose or transfer your information to a third-party.
Your Agreement. In addition to the disclosures mentioned in this section, your information may be disclosed, given your explicit authorization for us to do so.
Donor Confidentiality
CAGLA shares personal data (including name, contact details, and donation history) in cooperation with third-party vendors, like Stripe. These vendors utilize the provided personal data to create a customer profile. These organizations will not have ongoing or direct access to your personal data unless you opt to provide it to them directly by responding to an appeal.
As a donor, you have the option to exclude your name from any donor list sharing activity by contacting us.
Online Activity Data
CAGLA may also gather data that does not disclose your specific identity or does not directly relate to an identifiable person, referred to in this Privacy Statement as “Other Information,” which includes browser and device data, App usage data, Internet Protocol address, data collected via cookies, pixel tags and other technologies. Other Information also includes data that has been anonymized or aggregated in such a way that it no longer discloses your specific identity.
If applicable law necessitates that we treat Other Information as Personal Information, we may use and share it for the purposes for which we use and share Personal Information as detailed in this Privacy Statement.
Browser and Device Data. Most browsers or your device automatically collect certain information, such as your Media Access Control (MAC) address, computer type (Windows or Mac), screen resolution, operating system name and version, device manufacturer and model, language, Internet browser type and version and the name and version of the Sites (like the App) you are using. We utilize this data to ensure that the Sites function correctly.
CAGLA App Usage Data. Upon downloading and using CAGLA Apps, we and our service providers may track and gather App usage data, including when your device accesses our servers and what information and files are downloaded to the App based on your device number.
Internet Protocol Address. Your Internet Service Provider automatically assigns your IP address to your computer. We use IP addresses for purposes like calculating usage levels, diagnosing server issues, and administering the Sites. We may also determine your approximate location from your IP address. We keep track of page hits in aggregate to gauge the popularity of pages that people visit. This information helps us enhance the quality of the site.
We will also gather your IP address, along with basic contact information you provide on our website forms, such as the “Contact Us” form, “Volunteer sign-up” form, and “Story Collection” form.
Web Server Traffic Pattern Data and Browsing History. We gather standard web server traffic pattern data and your browsing history. General traffic, Site usage, browser data and length of stay data is collected and stored in log files.
Cookies. We utilize “cookies,” which are small files sent to your web browser and saved on your device, to elevate your online experience. These cookies gather information concerning your interaction with our websites. This includes the type of browser you’re using, your internet service provider, the website you were on before visiting ours, how you found our site, which specific pages you viewed, how long you spent on each page, the time and date you visited our site, along with anonymous traffic data. If you prefer not to have information collected via cookies, most browsers provide the option to automatically decline them, or to choose whether to accept or reject a specific cookie from a specific website. Using Similar Technologies. We may use pixel tags (also known as web beacons and clear GIFs) for multiple purposes, including tracking user actions on our sites, evaluating the efficacy of our marketing initiatives, and generating statistics about site usage and response rates.
Do Not Track. Some browsers feature a “Do Not Track” option that allows you to express your preference not to have your online activities tracked. At this time, we do not support or respond to browser do-not-track signals.
Analytics. We employ Google Analytics for Display Advertising features. These features use cookies and similar technologies to gather and analyze site usage data, track activities and trends. Google Analytics also collects information regarding the usage of other websites, apps, and online resources. If you wish to opt-out of Google Analytics for Display Advertising or customize Google Display Network ads, you can modify the Ads Settings or use the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-on to disable Google Analytics tracking. We use the data provided by Google Analytics to refine our site and tailor our content to our users’ interests.
Anonymous and Aggregate Information. We utilize anonymous and aggregate information to conduct research and analyze data, enhancing our understanding of cancer, cancer treatment, and the related needs of patients and caregivers. Anonymous information refers to data where identifiers have been removed, preventing any reasonable attempt to identify an individual. Aggregate information involves data about groups or categories of individuals that cannot be used to reasonably identify an individual. For example, we might use aggregate information to compare the types of websites our constituents use in different geographical locations, enhancing our understanding of how different groups compare.
Uses and Disclosures of Other Information. We may use and disclose other information for any purpose, except where we are restricted by applicable law. Sometimes, we may combine other information with personal information. If this occurs, we treat the combined information as personal information. For example, we may cooperate with data providers to customize our communications to you, merging your IP address or browsing history with other de-identified data.
Data Security Measures. We aim to protect personal information within our organization through reasonable organizational, technical, and administrative measures. Despite our efforts, we cannot guarantee absolute security for any data transmission or storage system. If you suspect that your interaction with us is no longer secure, please immediately notify us as indicated in the “How to contact us” section below.
Your Privacy Rights and Choices
Limits on Contact. Should you prefer not to be reached via email, kindly send us an opt-out request. As stipulated by law, your request will be adhered to. However, note that essential administrative communications may still be sent to you and cannot be opted out of.
Statements and Disclosures
Children’s Privacy. CAGLA intentionally does not collect data from anyone below the age of 13 without parental permission. If you suspect your child has shared personal information with CAGLA without your approval, and you wish to restrict or remove this information, kindly get in touch with us as outlined in the “Contacting us / Exercising Your Privacy Rights” section below.
Links to External Websites. Our Sites may include links to third-party websites which may have different privacy policies from CAGLA’s. Our Privacy Statement does not cover the privacy practices of these third parties, including those operating websites linked from our Sites. We do not endorse the products, websites, or privacy/security practices of these sites by linking to them. We also do not assume responsibility for their data collection, use, disclosure, or security policies or practices, including any personal information disclosed to other organizations through our Sites or Social Media Pages.
For California Residents. The California Civil Code Section 1798.83 allows California residents to ask for information about our disclosure of Personal Information to third parties for their direct marketing uses over the previous calendar year. For such requests, kindly get in touch with us as outlined in the “Contacting us / Exercising Your Privacy Rights” section below. Additionally, if you are a minor, under 18 years of age, and a registered user of our Sites, you can request the removal of any content or information you have posted on our Sites. We will reply to your requests as per the applicable law. Please note that making a request does not guarantee the complete removal of the content or information if, for example, it has been reposted by another user.
Jurisdiction and Cross-Border Transfer. Our Sites are managed and operated by us from the United States and we are not subject to the laws or jurisdiction of any other state, country, or territory outside of the United States. Contacting us / Exercising Your Privacy Rights
In some jurisdictions and states, including Colorado, you have specific rights regarding your Personal Information. This section details your rights and guides you on exercising these rights. With some limitations, such as our legal obligations, you have the right to access, get a copy of, correct, opt-out of the sale or sharing, and delete your Personal Information. You can also limit certain types of communication and appeal responses to your requests.

You’ll receive an email requesting you to confirm your request after submission. If you’re making a request on behalf of another person, please provide enough information for us to reasonably confirm that you’re authorized to make the request.
Accessing/Requesting a Copy of your Personal Information. As per the law, you may have the right to request information about the categories of Personal Information that CAGLA holds about you and/or request access to, and receive a copy of this Personal Information. To exercise these rights, please contact us. In your request, please specify the Personal Information you’d like to access. We may need to verify your identity before processing your request for your protection. If someone else is submitting the request on your behalf, we may need additional verification. We will strive to comply with your request as soon as reasonably practicable and as per the law.
Requesting Deletion. You have the right to ask for the deletion of any personal information we collected from you, subject to exceptions. Upon receiving and confirming your verifiable request, we will delete (and direct our service providers to delete) your personal information from our records, unless an exception applies.
Please note that after deletion, some personal information may remain to document the request. The right to access personal information may be limited in some circumstances by local law. To exercise this right, please contact us.
Appealing. Despite CAGLA’s good faith efforts to comply with privacy rights requests, there may be circumstances where we are unable to provide access.
